Cigars in History

The indigenous inhabitants of the islands of Mexico and the Americas smoked cigars as early as 1100 A.D. This is evidenced by the discovery of a ceramic vessel at a Mayan archaeological site located at Uaxactun, Guatemala. A painted figure of a man smoking a rudimentary form of cigar adorns the vessel.

It was the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus who officially inaugurated Europe to the pleasure of smoking tobacco. Because of this, he is credited with being the catalyst for the advent of the modern handmade cigar. He visited the indigenous population and noticed that they used tobacco for medicine, tribal rituals and for spiritual practices.

Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres, two crewmen who sailed with Columbus, are said to have been introduced to tobacco for the first time on the island San Salvador in the Bahamas. There, during the famous voyage of 1492, natives offered them fragrant dry leaves with an aroma that lingered after it was lit. Further exploration revealed that tobacco was widespread among the other island tribes, such as Cuba, which is the location where Columbus and his men established their first official settlement.

Columbus exported tobacco back to Europe and it was immediately all the rage. In fact, tobacco was such hit that, to much of the European population, the idea of farming tobacco served as a rationale for the colonization of North America, South America and the Caribbean.

Ship manifest records of 1592 recorded that the Spanish galleon, San Clemente, brought 50 kilograms, or 110 pounds, of tobacco seed over the Acapulco-Manila trade route to the Philippines. There the seed was allocated to Roman Catholic missions, where the clerics discovered that the climate and soil were ideal for growing high-quality tobacco.

In the centuries that followed, the use of tobacco became widespread. Its use for recreational purposes and as a stimulant became popular among people who worked long hours. By the 1700’s, Cuba became the premiere location for the best tobacco and for the development of what we know today as the modern cigar. The origins of the English word “cigar” come from the Spanish word cigarro, which in turn was a derivative from the Mayan word for tobacco, siyar.

From the 1700’s to today, Cuban cigars and Cuban tobacco became recognized as the world’s finest. However, the Communist take-over of Cuba by Fidel Castro in the early 1960’s, and the subsequent U.S. embargo, challenged that country’s title. Former Cuban cigar-makers took their skills and seeds to the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico, producing high-end cigars categorized as premium and super-premium.

Today, the exquisite pleasure of the premium cigar remains one luxury that connoisseurs enjoy worldwide. Handmade cigars that are part of this remarkable heritage may be obtained online through premium companies.

Ways Of Smoking A Cigar

Most cigars go out in between, and this is considered normal. Even an ardent cigar connoisseur will have to relight a cigar from time to time. In this matter, smoking a cigar is different from smoking a tobacco cigarette. One of the differences is that you do not take in the cigar smoke fully. Instead, the cigar lover would let the smoke linger in his mouth; and afterwards, he smoothly blows it out. Surprisingly, there is a lot more to smoking a tobacco cigar in the right manner. The seasoned and true cigar connoisseur does not enjoy the entire cigar at one go. He would not smoke it past the ribbon because it will not taste better and it is also against proper cigar smoking etiquettes. Cigar connoisseurs usually sit indoors alone or with some friends to enjoy the experience of smoking a cigar. However, some people prefer to smoke a cigar outside, wherever they like. But it is believed that you will be able to extract the most from your tobacco cigar and enjoy the flavour better, if you take time by being with some good friends.

A cigar connoisseur does not stub out a cigar. Instead, he would enjoy the smoke up to the ribbon and would place the cigar in the ashtray; there, the cigar goes out by itself, and that is the way it is done. He usually holds the cigar with his thumb and index finger. If he is smoking a longer cigar, he might use his thumb, index finger, and the middle finger as well. Sticking to the etiquettes, do not hold it between the index finger and the middle finger as in the case of a cigarette.

Cigars taste even better when served with some hot drinks like cognac or brandy. It is considered a mark of elegance and sophistication to smoke a cigar while having cognac. The drink will help conceal the taste of the ash you have in your mouth as you smoke. It will also act up as an enhancer to the cigar smoking experience. However, even if you do not drink, the cigar would still taste nice.

When a cigar company manufactures its own cigars, it is likely to take ample time to produce a perfect tobacco cigar. Although the manufacture of these cigars requires hard work and precision, do not forget about growing the main ingredient, the tobacco plants. It takes more care and dedication to have a good crop. Actually, this aspect pushes the tobacco company to grow only the finest tobacco plants and use it as fillers for their cigars. This will help the company offer the much needed customer satisfaction.

With quality above everything else, some of the leading cigar companies use this principle in their business practices. They offer cigars at affordable prices; the quality of cigars is guaranteed and the customers will come back for more tobacco cigars of the same brand. With a unique taste and a smooth, yet strong, draw, these fine cigars are sure to offer a delightful taste.

Cigar Processing And Different Types

Cigars are mostly named according to their measurements and sizes, but these are not at all strict definitions. In the bunch pressing process, once made, the bunch of cigars go into a mould consisting of 12 to 20 chambers. When the mould is full, it goes to a press and the bunch will get dried during the pressing time. It is a vital and very necessary operation done before the process of wrapping. After 20-30 minutes being under the press, the moulds are opened. Now, the cigar makers will turn the bunch in a right angle to avoid forming prominent lines in the part where both the parts of the mould are joined. After they are kept another 20-30 minutes under the press, the bunch is ready to be wrapped.

In fact, for creating better quality cigarettes and cigars, hand made cigar makers make use of some particular tools. The bunching machine is one such device and it serves particularly to improve the construction process. A rigid frame holds on to a belt and a moving cylinder is activated with the help of a lever. It is the same principle as that of a pocket cigarette rolling machine. Once the belt is filled up in the right manner, the bunch will be rolled evenly by the rotating movement of the machine. This thwarts the fillers from being getting twisted, which happens most of the time, when the bunch is made solely by hand.

Tobacco cigars are either hand-made or machine-made. In both these cases, they can act as long fillers or short fillers. Just imagine the picture of a crisp roll of homogenized tobacco binder, some natural wrappers cut out in advance and placed on an unwoven bobbin, and a short filler dispenser. All the things mentioned above are installed on a machine which has got the capacity to produce more than 20 cigars every minute. If you have a few tobacco leaves in your hand, and if you do not have any tools or accessories, the only way to smoke your stuff is by rolling it into a cigar. Cigars of premium quality are supposed to be hand-made and fall under the category of long filler cigars. There are two ways for setting the quality tobacco leaves in a bunch. The wrong way is to stack the tobacco leaves and to roll them together into shape. This is called as the book method, and it does not provide enough room for air circulation and can demand a heavy draw.

The right method would be to fold each tobacco leaf in accordion style and to place them side by side so that air can pass through and the smoke would deliver a pleasant experience. Handmade long filler cigars contain two to six full tobacco leaves, depending on the size. Tobacco leaves are oval in shape; getting a cylindrical shape with a highly uniform compactness is not very easy. Often, wrapping that comes with something spectacular fascinates people who smoke. But, the aspect of making the bunch requires a lot more skills and expertise.

Cigar Shops Have Changed As The World Has Changed

A cigar shop is a retail establishment that exists either as a storefront or an online catalogue. A walk-in store gives the smoker access to the most premium, fine cigars. It also gives the new smoker or the smoker on a budget, access to less expensive or newer brands.

One of the great things about a storefront cigar shop is it also gives smokers a place to actually smoke, and it also maintains a wait staff who can attend to clientele and answer questions.

An online cigar shop is a virtual realm that replaces the old storefront. It transcends geography, and it gives smokers from all over the world access to a very large inventory. A community management program is initiated to provide clients with customer service, specials, and information. Online cigar stores also offer a variety of prices so people on a budget can also enjoy fine tobacco.

Regardless of whether or not you are walking into a storefront cigar shop or surfing the catalog of an online equivalent, you can always count on finding premium cigar brands, less well-known but very good brands, cigar lighters, cigar cutters, and cigar humidors.

Many cigar stores also carry specialty cigarettes, such as electronic cigarettes, or cigarettes made from additive free tobacco. Many also carry pipes and pipe tobacco as well.

Gift items are also very popular through online resources. Cigars can now be purchased in gift packages, and special accessories like coffee mugs, special ashtrays, and golf cart clips can also be obtained. Such gifts can be great gestures of appreciation in a world that seems to be appreciating smokers less and less on a daily basis.

But who needs them when we have each other, right?

As things have changed in this great and mysterious world that we live in, so, too, has the old imagery and feel of many cigar shops changed. What we often visualize as iconic is really a memory of a bygone era.

That is not to say that you will not find the same images and motifs present in a modern cigar lounge or store, but there is a greater diversity of products and clear evidence of globalization in even the smallest of haunts these days.

In the old days there was little difference between what we now call a cigar lounge and a cigar shop. Both were places to purchase and smoke cigars, and smaller stores had limited inventories or maybe even only a handful of brands to offer. In those days as well, many European immigrants to the United States were truly and utterly illiterate and could not read even so much as a sign over the door of a store.

So it was decided by cigar store owners at that time to symbolize the establishment with a wooden statue of a Native American man or woman standing at the door. This symbol was chosen because Native Americans introduced Europeans to tobacco when first contact was made between the two cultures.

Today, it is considered bad form to use a racial symbol like this. It promotes a negative stereotype of Native American people, and it is also no longer necessary, considering how European-Americans have since learned to read, and even shop online.

The Guinness World Record for hand-rolling the longest cigar in the world has been held by individuals or teams in only three places: Cuba, Puerto Rico and the United States.  the record Wallace and Margarita aimed to break was held by Cuban Jose Castelar Cairo who in May 2008 in Havana had rolled a cigar 148 ft 11 in long.

To roll the world’s longest cigar Wallace and Margarita had purchased around 140 lb of Ecuadorean tobacco which cost approximately $4,500.  They had pre-rolled the cigar into sections each measuring roughly 10 ft with a 64 ring gauge and this process had taken 104 hours.  The plan was on the day to roll all 18 sections together.

At the appointed hour (which for the Reyes was 4 am on Saturday November 21st 2009) they stepped into a tent which was built to act as a giant humidor and started rolling.

And on it went, minute by minute, hour after hour, the rolling of the longest cigar in the world was a total labor of love for these guys.  they actually ended up with a cigar measuring 196 feet 3 3/8 inches!!!
