I am looking to purchase some kind of Cigar accessories for my boyfriend. I am looking at Humidor Sets at the moment. I have seen them range from $70 to over $300. My questions is who makes a good humidor and are the accessories (lighter, cutter) a lower quality in the sets?

Any other accessories I could purchase for him? He is just getting into them and doesn’t have much at the moment…

Since so many artists, writers, and other creative folks have been cigar smokers, it’s perhaps no surprise that some wonderful – as well as not-so-wonderful – films and plays center on the world of cigars. Some of these works are already well-known, while others might require a little help reaching their audiences. A few of them may not even succeed with help. But for those who celebrate cigar smoking, these dramas (screen and stage) may be special treats.

Anna In the Tropics

The 2003 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, this play, set in 1929, gives viewers a rare opportunity to view the world through the eyes of those who make fine hand-rolled cigars. It concerns the daughters of a family of cigar workers, whose lives are forever marked when the factory’s new lector – the person hired to read to the workers’ reads Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina to them. The book becomes part of the factory’s life, inspiring love affairs, jealousies and fights. Hailed by critic Christine Dolen as “a passionate, explosive, tender play filled with poetic-evocative imagery, language that almost seems tactile,” the play managed to beat out new works by the far-more-established Edward Albee and Richard Greenberg for the Pulitzer in Drama. For cigar smokers, it provides a glimpse of the industry’s glory years before machine manufacture and the dominance of cigarettes, before Castro and the trade embargo.

The “lector,” by the way, was a real position. Cigar manufacture is a laborious process requiring constant care, and for many years, for that reason, handmade cigar factories hired a lector (reader) to keep the rollers alert and entertained by reading books to them. Audio books have partly eliminated the need for lectors (at least in some factory owners’ eyes), but other factories still use a lector – perhaps the best symbol of the mental attentiveness necessary to produce well-made premium cigars.

Smoke

This 1995 indie film rendered writer Paul Auster something like a household name – or as close to a household name as authors of existential detective stories get. It’s also a virtual paean to cigar smoking, with its sprawling plot set at the Brooklyn Cigar Company, where owner Auggie Wren ponders the varied types of humanity who turn up therein. (His theory is that everyone in the world eventually shops at the Brooklyn Cigar Factory.) Within this framework, the movie ponders the random yet meaningful connections among disparate individuals – one of the themes of Auster’s writing, and a theme of several important 1990s American art films, including Grand Canyon, Short Cuts and Magnolia. Auster’s selection of a smoke shop as his setting renders the film, which is based on one of his own short stories, especially meaningful for diehard cigar smokers.

Smokin’ Stogies

An entire movie about the search for some missing Cohibas? This 2002 low-budget crime film may not have won any awards, but with two of the stars of “The Sopranos” (whose swaggering, smoking mobsters have done their own bit to promote the smoking of stogies) and its cigar-oriented plot, the film ought to hold at least some interest for cigar lovers. It is described by Cigar Aficionado’s David Savona as “B-level material, an R-rated, small-budget experience that nevertheless should appeal to cigar smokers.” [it] serves up a subject matter palatable to aficionados. The movie includes the search for the mob’s missing Cubans and a plot to put real Cohiba bands on a trove of horrendous counterfeit cigars. There’s also a hilarious cigar-sniffing Doberman Pinscher who can tell a real Cuban from a fake.” If only every cigar smoker in America had a dog like that…

Predator

OK, this eighties sci-fi opus is not about cigars at all – at least not on the surface. Rather, it concerns a scary invisible alien hunter-thing that crash-lands in a Central American jungle and cuts up an elite Arnold Schwarzenegger-led military unit after they’re tricked into illegal Black Ops action by a corrupt major (Carl Weathers). (But what cigar smoker can forget the sight of Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch, lighting up the fattest imaginable stogie as he suits up?

In his essay “Sifting the Ashes,” the writer Jonathan Franzen has the following to say about the smoking habit he struggles to quit: “[W]hen you’re smoking, you’re acutely present to yourself: you step outside the unconscious forward rush of life.”

Beautiful words, with which many cigar smokers would agree. Perhaps that’s why so many of history’s most famous and best-loved writers are hard to mentally picture without a cigar: Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Collette, George Sand, Karl Marx. Not terrible company, and they’re not alone. Some major contemporary writers are cigar smokers as well.

Paul Auster

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Paul Auster graduated from Columbia, then moved to Paris, France to eke out a living as a French-literature translator. He’s been married to two highly-regarded American writers “Siri Hustvedt (currently) and, before that, Lydia Davis, who is also known for her translation work – and his novels The New York Trilogy and Moon Palace are modern classics. He’s known for using the shape of the detective story to entertain larger questions about the meaning of identity, of language, and of existence. But his biggest fame – and his importance to smokers – came when he wrote and co-directed the movie Smoke, a landmark of American indie cinema set in a Brooklyn cigar shop.

Centered on Auggie Wren, owner of the Brooklyn Cigar Company – a sort of existential Dew Drop Inn where large cross-sections of humanity gather – it ponders the random yet seemingly meaningful connections among various people, a major theme in Auster’s writing (as well as of several other major American art films from the same period – consider Short Cuts and Magnolia). Edward Whittemore

Here’s an artist with a colorful life indeed – he went from Yale to the Marines to the CIA, wrote for the Japan Times (it was part of his cover), lived in Crete, and wrote the massive, tripped-out series of literary espionage novels known as the Jerusalem Quartet, a work lauded by Tom Robbins as – like a bowl of hashish pudding – and by Jonathon Carroll as a book that

“makes your soul grow.” (To give you an idea: one of the books is about a 12-year-long game of poker in which the winner becomes owner of the Holy Land. That’s just the plot of one of them.) Yet the Quartet went out of print after only a few years, and Whittemore ended his days in dire poverty and obscurity, working as a photocopier for a law firm.

In 2003, eight years after his death, the Quartet was republished to all-but-universal acclaim; Jim Hougan, writing in Harper’s, called it “one of the last, best arguments against television” and Whittemore – an author of extraordinary talents. His friend Thomas C. Wallace remembers his love of cigars: “We walked the woods and fields of southern Vermont by day, sat in front of the house after dinner on solid green Adirondack chairs, drinks in hand and smoking cigars.” In a similar spirit, lovers of fine cigars should search out his one-of-a-kind novels – after all, premium cigar smokers already know that the most immediately accessible pleasures aren’t always the deepest.

John Grisham

You probably know that John Grisham is an ex-lawyer and the biggest-selling novelist of the 1990s, but you probably don’t know about his charity work, his advocacy on behalf of the wrongly imprisoned, his tireless support of less-commercially-successful writers – or the fact that it’s been said he smokes four cigars a week. In addition to writing the well-loved legal thrillers The Firm and A Time To Kill, among others (as well as such departures as A Painted House), he has done missionary and relief work in Brazil and service on the board of the Innocence Project, which uses DNA testing to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. Perhaps all of this is why he ended up on one of Cigar Aficionado’s lists of the top hundred smokers.

New cigar smokers have quite a bit to learn. Just a few of these include the proper lighting process, how to relight a cigar and even how to take care of uneven burns. However, one of the very first lessons should involve the proper lighting implements. Most smokers believe that using Zippo lighters is an acceptable thing. It is not. You should never use a Zippo to light a cigar, unless you simply do not want to enjoy that smoke. Why should you avoid these lighters? What are your options?

First, Zippos use standard lighter fluid. This is that smelly stuff that you don’t want to get on your hands. However, while the fluid smells, the flame and the smoke from the flame do as well. Lighter fluid contains numerous impurities, which, when burned, put off a foul odor. If you use that lighter to fire up your cigar, you’ll find that those tastes and odors are imparted to your cigar. This will ruin the taste of your cigar and leave you with a lackluster experience, to say the least.

In fact, any type of lighter that uses standard lighter fluid should be avoided. Instead, you should opt for the new torch lighters on the market, as these use butane. Butane has no odor, no taste and no color. This is because it is virtually free of impurities. Therefore, when you use it to light your cigar, you’ll taste only the cigar and nothing else.

Other options are certainly available for your needs as well. You can use matches, or you can use matches in conjunction with cedar shavings. Some diehard cigar lovers swear by cedar shavings, mostly because they offer flavor enhancement for cigars. Of course, using these is not possible when you’re out and about, or when you’re smoking in a breeze. Therefore, butane lighters are not only an important consideration, but the only way that you can ensure you are able to light up even in windy conditions.

Hopefully, you can see that the use of Zippos is not a good idea and will result in a subpar smoking experience. Save your cigar’s flavor and aroma by using a quality butane lighter. You will find that purchasing a dual or triple jet lighter will even help ensure that you’re able to light that cigar on the first try every time.
